Training and Course

Setelah Mualem lulus SMA pada 1984, ia pernah kuliah di Fakultas Hukum Universitas Syiah Kuala sebelum kemudian memilih menjadi pejuang GAM.[3] Pada tahun 1986, Mualem berangkat ke Libya, di mana ia menerima pelatihan tempur bersama anggota GAM lainnya. Di Libya, ia sempat menjadi pengawal pribadi Muammar Khadafi.Menyusul tewasnya Panglima GAM Abdullah Syafi’i pada tahun 2002 dalam pertempuran dengan prajurit Tentara Nasional Indonesia, Muzakir Manaf ditunjuk menjadi Panglima Komando Pusat GAM.Setelah Perjanjian Helsinki, Mualem turun gunung. Ia kemudian menjabat sebagai ketua Komite Peralihan Aceh. Kemudian, ia menjadi salah satu pendiri Partai Gerakan Aceh Mandiri (atau Partai GAM, yang kemudian berganti nama menjadi Partai Aceh menyusul keluhan dari pemerintah pusat) dan menjadi ketua pertamanya.
